Crew Life
Soldiers in 7 Toronto will get to perform in a variety of tasks as the requirements arise.
The main purpose of training is to man and operate the battery consisting of howitzers and mortars.
The additional training of critical roles is given to troops as requirements rise. The soldier’s
earliest essential training begins in BMQ or basic military qualifications.
Here, they learn military law, drill, field survival techniques and how to operate the C7, Canadian standard
issue service rifle. From there, they progress to SQ or soldier qualification in which more advanced
weaponry is introduced including the operation of the C6, C9 machine guns, hand grenades and The 84mm
SRAAW(M). Soldiers end training by learning to spend a week in the field using the new techniques and
weapons taught to them. Training progresses from there into specialized trade qualification.
Artillery soldiers will learn to become gunners by training in crews to operate the 105mm Howitzer and
the 81mm Mortar.
